DBA's Freight Market Update: December 4, 2025

This week: U.S. and U.K. strike new deal on pharma tariffs; Global economy stays resilient despite trade tensions; Thousands of U.S. truck schools face federal review.

Current Critical Industry Trends

U.S. and U.K. strike new deal on pharma tariffs. The tariff exemption covers medicines, medical tech, and ingredients, offering relief to U.K. exporters. President Trump’s administration tied the decision to pricing reforms in the U.K., with the NHS set to raise new medicine prices by 25%.

Ocean

A two-tier future emerges for global container shipping. Massive vessel orders are saturating key corridors, while aging feeder ships are quietly disappearing. Analysts warn that smaller trades could suffer reduced connectivity and rate pressure through the rest of the decade.

Ports

November tested the pulse of global ports under pressure and progress. Major incidents disrupted operations while strategic appointments and infrastructure builds signaled forward momentum. As ports digitize and diversify, resilience and smart planning are becoming non-negotiable.

International

Global economy stays resilient despite trade tensions. The OECD now expects 3.2% global growth this year, with gains led by India and steady momentum from China. President Trump’s tariffs have been milder than feared, while early importing and AI investment helped offset shocks.

Trucking

Thousands of U.S. truck schools face federal review. Officials say 3,000 may lose certification for failing training standards, aiming to ensure drivers are properly licensed and safe.

Will County is a key logistics hub. Its intermodal centers, rail connections, and highway access support high-volume container, warehouse, and trucking operations. Officials are modernizing infrastructure and improving freight flow to manage growing traffic.

Rail

CSX expects a $40 million setback this quarter. Coal derailments and auto production delays weighed on results, while domestic intermodal volumes remain robust and overall traffic is up 2.2%.

Air

Lufthansa Cargo and Swiss WorldCargo aim to streamline global airfreight. The partnership will harmonize shipment flows, unify IT platforms, and coordinate operations while keeping both brands distinct.

Technology

A new remote monitoring center is moving autonomous shipping closer to reality. The Taipei-based hub will support AI-guided navigation, real-time equipment checks, and condition-based maintenance. Early trials showed fuel savings and more accurate arrival times.

Other

Canada and Alberta struck a major energy accord. The plan advances an Indigenous co-owned pipeline to Asian markets and pauses federal emissions rules. Officials say it positions the country for stronger growth and expanded energy infrastructure.
