This week: U.S. delayed a planned 50% tariff on European imports from June 1 to July 9; American Trucking Association celebrated a victory following the Senate’s repeal of three California emissions waivers; European port congestion is worsening as major gateways face growing backlogs.

Current Critical Industry Trends

U.S. court strips back Trump’s tariff authority in key ruling. The 3-judge panel ruled across-the-board tariffs unconstitutional. A 90-day pause on China tariffs followed the ruling fallout. The baseline 10% tariff on imports is now permanently blocked.

The U.S. delayed a planned 50% tariff on European imports from June 1 to July 9, providing temporary relief to supply chains. The extension came after talks between President Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to allow more time for trade negotiations. The move aims to ease tensions while addressing the ongoing trade deficit.

The American Trucking Association celebrated a victory following the Senate’s repeal of three California emissions waivers. ATA called the move a win for the trucking industry, common sense, and consumers.

Tariff uncertainty is putting shippers in a tough position as they scramble to manage supply chains. Announcements of temporary tariff reductions have driven a spike in freight rates, with experts noting shippers are willing to pay more to ensure delivery within the exemption window. The question now: how high will rates climb?

Ports

European port congestion is worsening as major gateways face growing backlogs. Low water levels on the Rhine are further straining inland logistics, forcing carriers to reroute vessels and introduce surcharges. Shippers now face rising costs and longer transit times across the region.

CMA CGM is investing $600 million in a new North Vietnam container terminal with partner Saigon Newport Corporation. Scheduled to open in 2028, the project aims to expand long-term capacity in a central Asian trade hub.

Trucking

Reducing trade friction is seen as key to productivity gains. 82% of Canadian business leaders believe lifting internal barriers will improve operations. 58% also want a full tax review.

Rail

Rail service restored in Asheville after Hurricane Helene disruption. Thirteen miles of track were repaired using over 160,000 tons of aggregate, and more than 2,000 trees were cleared to reconnect Tennessee and North Carolina.

Lufthansa Cargo raises the bar for pharma logistics. New control tower and smart ULD tracking boost transparency and speed. Over 30 CEIV Pharma stations now support temperature-sensitive cargo.

WestJet strengthens Asia trade with Calgary–Tokyo route. Daily service enhances access for time-sensitive and high-value freight. The route supports Canada’s meat and seafood exports into Japan.

Technology

Maritime safety hits record high but new threats surface. Global ship losses dropped by 20% in 2024 with only 27 total reported. But fire incidents surged 20% as GPS jamming and Red Sea attacks raise alarm.
